In stock at the moment we have this beautiful solitaire diamond ring. The square outline of the stone was very popular in the 1920's and 1930's. The diamond in this ring is referred to as an Asscher cut stone. It's named after the Asscher family of stone cutters who operated out of Amsterdam in the early 1900's. The family's greatest claim to fame was that they were requested to cut the Cullinan diamond by King Edward VII.
The story goes that the honour of making the first cut fell to Joseph Asscher. He took the responsibility very seriously spending a number of months studying the stone to get to know where all the faults and inclusions lay. However, his first attempt at cutting before a large audience ended with embarrassment, the blade broke!
New stronger tools were requested. Joseph waited another month before a second attempt. It is said that when he made the first cut this time the pressure was so great that he momentarily fainted!
Eventually however 9 major diamonds were cut from this one huge rough crystal which had weighed 3106 carats. The largest two stones, the Cullinan 1 and 2 are now part of the British Crown Jewels.
Our ring comes with an EGL stone Certificate. (interestingly, most gem labs refer to asscher cuts as Square emerald cut on their Certificates).
