Marston Barrett have been serving customers since 1938 and this week we are celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, with a display of 126 poppies representing the men who gave their lives and are named on the war memorial in Lewes.
In our display we have pictures of Sidney Fisk, his sister Doris, his great friend Johny Campbell and the infantry boys from the DCLI (Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry) Regiment.
Sid joined the territorial army in 1940 at the age of 15 and went onto serve in the 7th battalion of the Royal Hampshires, DCLI and RASC Regiments.
It was during his service that he met Johny. They travelled from France through Belgium and Holland to Germany. Their motto was "Don't give in now, we'll beat the foe, we are the Royal Hampshires, Britain's best, so pick up your kit and stick out your chest, grit your teeth and carry on".
After the liberation of Bergen-Belson they finally returned to Blighty in 1947.
Now miles apart they wrote to each other and met up when it was possible.
Sid married Margaret and Johny, Lola. They honoured their promise to be each other's best man.
Margaret worked at Barretts during the 1950s and their granddaughter works here today.
Sid and Johny remained true and faithful friends throughout their lives and despite their passing, the two families still keep in touch today. The letters have been replaced with messages and the meet-ups continue.
